Reliability must become socially and materially legible because coordination begins before exhaustive verification is possible. People look for signs that a person has prepared, understands the mission, respects the room, and can be trusted with a next step. Clean documents, maintained tools, proportionate dress, punctual arrival, clear speech, and completed follow-through do not prove character; they make practiced care available to perception.
Competence made visible is different from status display. Status asks to be believed because of price, title, access, or costume. Competence supplies evidence through work. The American standard therefore prefers the repaired tool to the fashionable replacement, the accurate briefing to the impressive vocabulary, and the person who quietly closes the loop to the person who performs importance while leaving work behind.
**Public standard**
- Prepare enough that the room need not absorb preventable disorder.
- Make work readable through accurate records and clean presentation.
- Allow confidence to rest on practiced capability.
- Give credit by name and accept responsibility without dispersing it.
The comportment routes are [[american/American Comportment - 04 - Correspondence and the Written Person|Correspondence]] and [[american/American Comportment - 06 - Meetings and Rooms|Meetings and Rooms]]. Visible competence is not vanity refined. It is reliability translated into a language other people can use.
