Old Intelligence Reawakened]] Patriotism expressed through conduct is more durable than patriotism expressed only through decoration. A nation is loved when its laboratories are allowed to discover, its systems are maintained, its borders and communities are protected, its courts and records remain trustworthy, its schools form capable citizens, and its people accept responsibility for work whose beneficiaries may never know their names. Competence is love of country rendered useful. America without fanfare does not prohibit flags, ceremonies, songs, or celebration. It places those symbols in their proper order. Pageantry recalls the promise; stewardship keeps it. A flag displayed beside neglected duty becomes a substitute for patriotism, while a citizen who maintains a public system, mentors a younger worker, answers the call, keeps the record, or repairs an institution may carry the country without wearing it. America without fanfare does not mean America without victory, first place, superiority, ambition, or the honest celebration of achievement. A country may become the best at a difficult thing and say so plainly; false modesty would be another kind of performance. The prohibition concerns flaunting supremacy: turning achievement into a taunt, using rank to make other people smaller, or announcing greatness more vigorously than the country continues to earn it. Excellence may stand at the top; character governs how it stands there. **Public standard** - Honor national symbols through knowledge and proportion. - Place service, maintenance, and protection ahead of self-display. - Build institutions worthy of confidence and enter them in good faith. - Let American pride become increased national capability. The behavioral routes are [[american/American Comportment - 07 - Occasions and Protocol|Occasions and Protocol]] and [[american/American Comportment - 09 - Everyday Civic Courtesy|Everyday Civic Courtesy]]. The most convincing patriot is often the person quietly ensuring that the country still works when the ceremony has ended. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Nothing can take the place of the ordinary, everyday performance of duty.” [[reminders/Civic Character/The Everyday Performance of Duty by Theodore Roosevelt|∴]] > **— Theodore Roosevelt**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > Sandia states the purpose beneath its technical work: “We render exceptional service in the national interest.” [[reminders/National Defense/Exceptional Service in the National Interest by Sandia National Laboratories|∴]] > **— Sandia National Laboratories**, *National Security Is Our Mission* <!-- BEGIN AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER --> ## American Knowledge Router **System:** [[collections/American|American Collection]] · [[wiki/American System|American System]] · [[wiki/American Ethos|American Ethos]] · [[american/American Ethos - Vision and Doctrine|Branch source]] **Concepts:** [[wiki/American Pride|American Pride]] · [[wiki/American Refinement|American Refinement]] **Intelligence, defense, and alliance:** [[wiki/American Intelligence and Alliance Interface|American Intelligence and Alliance Interface]] · [[collections/The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace|The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace]] · [[collections/Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment|Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment]] · [[collections/US-Israel Leadership Alliance|US–Israel Leadership Alliance]] <!-- END AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER -->
