Wanting people to play, laugh, love, and do what they love is a deeply spiritual aim. Doing what one loves is one of the surest ways to serve the divine.}} - {{Tall poppy syndrome keeps talented people quiet. Workplaces and communities often punish those who rise, speak up, or suggest improvements. Recognizing the pattern helps a person decide when to keep their head down and when to stand tall.}} - {{Many social clubs of power function as surrogates for something deeper. Exclusive circles can promise belonging while offering only status. The richer belonging lies in truth, beauty, love, and creative life, which are open to everyone.}} - {{An open mind hears the essence beneath the vocabulary. Some listeners close a steel gate at the word "God," others at "the universe" or "neuroscience." Leaving the gate open lets a person understand what others are truly saying, and a saying often attributed to Benjamin Franklin defines ignorance as the state of a mind closed to teaching.}} - {{Human beings remain primates, capable of both brutality and transcendence. The suffering and cruelty in the world show how much of the ancient ape survives, while the frontal lobe and the higher spirit aspire to something greater. Holding both truths is the honest starting point for growth.}} - {{Life is full of contradictions, and people are walking contradictions. One foot can rest in heaven and the other in hell. Accepting contradiction makes room for both humility and aspiration.}} - {{As above, so below. The logarithmic spiral appears in nautilus shells, galaxies, and growing things, a self-similar pattern written into the fabric of nature. People, in turn, remake the world in their own image.}} - {{Science still has much to learn about the simplest living things. A tomato contains thousands of phytochemicals, many of them poorly understood, and the full mystery of how a blade of grass grows continues to humble researchers. Humility before nature is a scientific virtue.}} - {{Analog experience carries a resolution that recordings only approximate. A digital sample is segmented, compressed, and limited by its storage, while the living world flows continuously. Standing at the Grand Canyon delivers far more information than any photograph of it.}} [[reminders/Information/Living Experience Exceeds the Resolution of Recordings by Bryant McGill|∴]] - {{The electromagnetic spectrum vastly exceeds what human eyes can see. Human vision captures only the narrow band of visible light, while a phone camera can even detect the infrared flash of a remote control. Instruments keep extending perception into wider ranges of reality.}} - {{Everything is a transmission. Sunlight travels about 186,000 miles per second to deliver energy to a seed, and a sperm delivers its payload of DNA to an egg. Seeing life as constant exchange invites reverence for the connections that sustain it.}} - {{Time in nature restores people. Sunlight on closed eyelids, wind, and the smell of the land deliver a richness that indoor substitutes miss. Many people feel better outdoors without knowing why, and that feeling is worth following.}} - {{Surrogates can replace the real experience. A tanning bed stands in for the sun, a photo feed for a canyon, shopping for love, and a video call for a touch. Choosing the real version whenever possible keeps life vivid.}} - {{The slide toward surrogates happens slowly and with consent. Each convenience seems harmless, while their sum can drain a life of texture. Responsibility for reversing it rests with each person's daily choices.}} - {{Advertising often works by making people dislike themselves. Images of flawless bodies and skin can create a feeling of inadequacy that a product then promises to heal. Seeing the cycle helps people refuse the bait and treat themselves with kindness.}} - {{Babies show how lovable the human body is. Their rolls and round tummies delight everyone who sees them. Every adult was once that cherished baby and still deserves that tenderness.}} - {{Power is usually surrendered voluntarily. Old tales of signing away one's soul describe how people trade freedom for comfort, approval, or security. Reclaiming power begins with noticing which contracts have been signed.}} - {{Abusive systems, like abusive people, insist they are needed. In truth, organizations depend on the creativity, labor, and spirit of the people inside them. Remembering who truly holds the power restores dignity.}} - {{The will to live is a powerful force. An animal cornered will fight with everything it has, and the same life force lives in every person. Tapping that will gives the courage to break out of a limiting situation.}} - {{Self-realization can begin in a single moment. The Delphic maxim "Know thyself" and Shakespeare's counsel "to thine own self be true" both point to the same awakening. One honest moment alone with oneself can start the change.}} - {{Everything needed already lives within. Many people spend their lives searching outside for what is already present inside. The search ends where self-knowledge begins.}} - {{Some minds resist conditioning from the start. Like a few bacteria that survive a treatment meant to eliminate them all, certain people are naturally immune to the pressures that subdue others. Their resistance can become a gift when it is used to help others.}} - {{Many people stay inside an open cage. A line often attributed to Harriet Tubman says she could have freed many more had they known they were enslaved. Psychologist Martin Seligman called the related pattern learned helplessness, and the elephant that stays tied to a small stake from its youth illustrates it vividly.}} - {{Reading the great poets and transcendentalists is like hearing a warning shouted through time. Thoreau wanted to live deeply and suck out all the marrow of life, and the film Dead Poets Society echoed the call to seize the day. Those voices keep inviting people to live fully.}} - {{The invitation-only world is a manifestation of self-realization. People who seem to live by different rules, such as artists, inventors, and the wealthy, often gave themselves permission before anyone else did. The invitation is written, sent, and received from within.}} - {{Persistence opens doors. Writing to three hundred eminent thinkers and receiving replies from two can be enough to launch a mentorship and an entirely new life. Many attempts are often the price of one breakthrough.}} - {{Mentors often teach by asking a newcomer to listen. Sitting quietly at tables with accomplished people is one of the fastest ways to learn how the world works. Humility in new company accelerates growth.}} - {{Growth requires shedding old skins. Friedrich Nietzsche wrote that a snake must shed its skin or perish. Expanding past outgrown identities keeps a person alive in every sense.}} - {{A baby photograph can guide adult growth. Labeling a childhood picture with the words "who to be when grown up" is a reminder to recover the innocence, openness, and joy that years of conditioning buried. Returning to that child is a form of excavation.}} - {{Business can be done like falling in love. Meeting partners with openness, warmth, and genuine delight builds relationships that last. Innocence and success can grow together.}} - {{The creative work of a writer is to point at beauty. Every image, article, and line can serve as a signpost saying "look over here." The beauty belongs to life itself, and the artist simply helps others see it.}} - {{Praise can be redirected to those who need it. When a community gathers, encouragement offered to a struggling member does more good than compliments for the speaker. Love grows when it circulates.}} - {{Positivity is contagious. Spending time in a warm, encouraging community can lift people who are lonely or struggling. Anyone in crisis in the United States can call or text 988 for immediate support.}} - {{Humans are creators with immense power. Corporations, governments, and movements all depend on the creativity people supply. Treating oneself as a creator, and as the ultimate product to invest in, restores a sense of agency.}} > [!info]- > ![[resources/livestreams/solo/livestream-returning-to-your-power-by-reclaiming-agency-from-systems-of-control-part-2--ls-1d931acf9a5f.jpg]] > ![[resources/livestreams/duo/livestream-returning-to-your-power-by-reclaiming-agency-from-systems-of-control-part-2--ls-1d931acf9a5f.jpg]] > ![[resources/livestreams/near-orig/livestream-returning-to-your-power-by-reclaiming-agency-from-systems-of-control-part-2--ls-1d931acf9a5f.jpg]] > ![[resources/livestreams/orig/livestream-returning-to-your-power-by-reclaiming-agency-from-systems-of-control-part-2--ls-1d931acf9a5f.jpg]] > > ![[shared/parts/About Livestreams|About Livestreams]] ## Security That Preserves the Organism and Starves the Life *In this part of the broadcast I was describing the arrangement that keeps a person safe and empty at the same time, so I taught it through the enclosure that protects an animal by ending everything the animal was for. The mechanism underneath is this.* +A living structure can fail in two opposite directions, and only one of them is widely feared. It can be torn apart by a gradient too steep to withstand, which is the failure everyone guards against, and it can be preserved perfectly while the flow that constituted it stops, which is the failure that arrives disguised as success. A flame keeps its shape only because wax and air move through it continuously; shelter it completely from the air and the shape is not protected but abolished. {{A structure sustained by flow is destroyed as surely by the removal of its gradient as by the excess of it.}} Security pursued as the governing purpose of a life performs the second destruction precisely and on schedule. The job, the arrangement, the identity, and the routine are all retained; the exposure that produced growth, contact, and capacity is reduced toward zero; and the result is an intact shell around a stalled process. Recognizing this converts the question from how much risk to accept into which gradients a person is deliberately keeping open, which is a design decision rather than a matter of nerve. [[articles/The Desiccative Succession|The Desiccative Succession]] follows the same two failure modes to civilizational scale. ## The Invisible Contract and the Manufacture of Inadequacy *In this part of the broadcast I was describing the terms people live under without having read them, so I taught it through the invisible contract and the manufactured feeling of not being enough. The mechanism underneath is this.* +An invisible contract is a set of terms a person performs without ever having seen stated. It arrives as obvious expectation rather than as an agreement — the sequence a life is supposed to follow, the deference owed to particular authorities, the conditions under which a person may consider themselves acceptable — and because it was never presented for signature, there is no document to examine, no counterparty to negotiate with, and no clause a person can identify as the one costing them the most. Performance of unexamined terms feels like having standards. {{Terms you never read still bind you, and the ones that were never written down are the hardest to renegotiate.}} Manufactured inadequacy is the clause that does the most work, because it converts an ordinary human variation into a deficiency and then supplies the remedy for sale. The method requires real material to operate on, which is why it targets appearance, status, and security, and why the resulting feeling is indistinguishable from self-knowledge. Reading the contract aloud is most of the remedy: name the term, locate who benefits from its performance, and decide deliberately whether to keep it. [[blog/20250923 - The Right to Understand|The Right to Understand]] generalizes this into the asymmetry between the party holding the causal map and the party living inside the consequences.
