# NVMe over Fabrics **Domain:** Storage / Networking / Open Standards **Doc Type:** Technical Standard Node **Maturity:** Established and Evolving ## Definition **NVMe over Fabrics** extends NVMe command and queue semantics across network fabrics so hosts can access nonvolatile storage beyond a directly attached PCI Express device. ## Governing Boundary The architecture separates the storage protocol from one local attachment. Transport mappings allow NVMe operations to traverse supported fabric types, making remote storage usable with a common command model. ## Higher-Order Capability Compute and storage can be disaggregated, pooled and scaled on different lifecycles. A workload can reach high-performance persistent state across the data center rather than only within one chassis. ## Relation to Governance Disaggregation creates a control question: which host may discover, authenticate to and consume which storage resource. The network and storage control planes jointly determine whether the authoritative state is practically reachable. ## Failure Modes Remote access adds transport, congestion, path and authorization dependencies.
