# Observability **Domain:** Control Theory / Operations / Computing **Doc Type:** Technical Concept Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Observability** is the degree to which internal system state can be inferred from available outputs. It is not the same as collecting many measurements; a system can emit abundant data while leaving decisive state unidentifiable. ## Governing Variable Observability governs inferential access to state. ## Material and Computational Manifestation In control engineering, sensor placement and system dynamics determine whether state can be reconstructed. In software operations, logs, metrics and traces expose different dimensions of behavior. In a facility, electrical, thermal and workload telemetry must be related before operators can diagnose coupled failure. ## Relation to Governance Observability creates intervention capacity because a system that can infer state can compare it with objectives. It also creates an asymmetry between the observing layer and actors whose local reality is compressed into outputs. ## Constitutional Question and Failure Modes More observation is not automatically better governance. Instrumentation can violate privacy, reward proxy optimization or produce false confidence. Legitimate observability is fit for purpose, bounded, documented and coupled to uncertainty and correction. ## Related Ontology Telemetry · State Estimation · Latent State Estimation · Control Surface · Digital Twin ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > "Every meaningful model action must leave tamper-proof human readable evidence. If it can't be observed, it can't be trusted!
