# Self-Determination
**Domain:** Human agency / Motivation / Personal development
**Doc Type:** Canonical concept node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
Self-determination is the capacity to choose a direction, organize conduct around it, and experience one's actions as meaningfully authored rather than merely imposed.
## Mechanism and Significance
Self-determination grows when a person can recognize inherited routines, identify personally held aims, and direct attention, discipline, and effort toward those aims. Constraint does not eliminate self-determination; the relevant question is whether the person can participate in selecting and governing the plan.
## Evidence Boundary
Personal authorship should not be confused with complete control over circumstances. Economic conditions, obligations, health, institutions, and relationships shape the available choices. The concept concerns meaningful direction within reality, not magical independence from it.

> “Many people feel like machines on someone else's assembly line. Daily routines can carry a person along in a sleepwalking state. Recognizing that feeling is the first step toward building a life of one's own design.”
