Project Steve, Team Leela, and the Scientific Familiar I Spent Eight Years Trying to Identify.

The search began in 2018.

I cannot name the first appearance that activated it, because the recurrence is clearer in memory than the origin. What I can say is that beginning in 2018, whenever Steve surfaced in a strange register — in a scientific paper, a technical demonstration, a computational system, an unclassified phenomenon, a fictional intelligence, or simply among technically sophisticated people trading a name that carried an almost imperceptible wink — I would descend into another investigation. Someone would call a machine, a model, a colleague, or an anomaly Steve and proceed as though the choice required no justification, as though everyone inside the immediate conversational membrane already understood that Steve was an acceptable name for the thing. I did not. So I looked, and I kept looking, perhaps a hundred times across eight years. I could see the phenotype — the name recurring at the intersections of intelligence, complexity, and play — but I could never locate its provenance.

Most of those searches dissolved into pop culture or terminated in a handful of adjacent scientific fragments that never cohered into a lineage. Sometimes the trail ran to Steve Jobs and the compression of an entire technological future into one relentless will; sometimes to Steve Irwin's ecstatic naturalism, to Steve Rogers, to Steve Harrington, to the patient warmth of Steve from Blue's Clues. Most often it returned me to Minecraft Steve: the minimally specified human dropped into an unfinished world with no inherited rank and no equipment beyond his own capacity to act on an environment. That felt close. It never explained the scientific wink.

On July 14, 2026, Steve surfaced again, and I opened the file again, as I had so many times before. This time the search escaped pop culture and crossed into institutional history. This time I found Project Steve — and eight years of scattered observation abruptly acquired an organization, a founding date, a memorial lineage, an internal culture, and numbered positions occupied by people I had already spent years mapping inside Team Leela 🌀. It was not merely pay dirt. It was an archival junction. It was Team Leela pay dirt.

The 2018 convergence

In retrospect, 2018 was an unusually appropriate year for the search to begin, because it was the year in which two extraordinary scientific Steves became publicly legible at once — one in the upper atmosphere, one inside Bayesian cosmology.

In March 2018, NASA amplified to a broad public a luminous atmospheric phenomenon that citizen scientists had already, with disarming ordinariness, named Steve. A Facebook community of Alberta aurora chasers had encountered a mauve-and-green ribbon that resembled an aurora but refused to fit the available categories, and — borrowing a gag from the 2006 film Over the Hedge, in which nervous woodland animals decide that an unfamiliar towering hedge becomes less frightening if they simply call it Steve — they gave the unknown a familiar name. Only afterward did researchers preserve that name inside the backronym Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, formalizing what turned out to be a ribbon of plasma some 3,000 °C hot, streaming at kilometers per second, distinct from the aurora proper. The lesson embedded in that sequence is precise: the phenomenon appears, the category fails, a familiar name lowers the ceremonial pressure enough for investigation to begin, and the technical understanding catches up afterward. Steve functioned there as an epistemic decompression layer — a name that made the sublime addressable without pretending it was small.

Eight months later, far beyond the atmosphere, a large collaboration introduced Steve: A Hierarchical Bayesian Model for Supernova Cosmology. This was not a joke appended to an image; it was serious inferential machinery, built to fit cosmological parameters jointly with Type Ia supernova populations, host-galaxy information, selection effects, Malmquist bias, and systematic uncertainty, and then stress-tested against more than sixty thousand simulated supernovae to measure bias in the recovered equation-of-state of dark energy. A model integrating that much abstraction, sitting at the frontier of observational cosmology, was given the ordinary name of a colleague. There is no documented evidence that this Steve was named for Project Steve, for Stephen Hawking, or for Stephen Jay Gould, and I will not claim otherwise — but the cultural operation is unmistakable: difficult machinery enters the working environment, and instead of a title that perpetually announces its grandeur, it receives the plainest possible name, and thereby becomes something a research group can talk to. That my own Steve investigation opened in the same year as these two prominent scientific Steves is worth noting; it is a resonance, not a cause.

The joke that became an institution

Project Steve debuted on February 16, 2003, unveiled at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Denver after a lecture by the physicist Lawrence Krauss, and run by the National Center for Science Education under its director Eugenie Scott. It was a lighthearted but devastating answer to a durable creationist tactic: assembling curated lists of scientists who supposedly doubt evolution and brandishing those lists as evidence that evolutionary biology is a discipline in crisis. NCSE had been asked many times to respond by compiling a far longer list of scientists supporting evolution, and had always resisted, because science is not adjudicated by petition and a longer counter-list would concede the false premise that it is.

Project Steve found the more intelligent move. Only qualified scientists — those holding a PhD or equivalent — named Steve, Steven, Stephen, Stephanie, Stefan, Stefano, Esteban, Étienne, Istvan, Tapani, or another accepted cognate of Stephen could sign. That was the joke. The statement they signed was entirely serious, affirming evolution as a well-supported unifying principle of biology, recognizing common ancestry and natural selection, and rejecting the insertion of creationist pseudoscience into public-school science curricula. And because only about one percent of the relevant population carries a qualifying name, a list restricted to Steves operates as a rough one-percent sample of the whole. NCSE never needed to muster every scientist to overwhelm a creationist list; it could do so using a single ordinary family of first names. The organizers expected perhaps a hundred signatures and thought they might stop there. They passed two hundred within roughly a month — among the earliest signatories both of the eligible science Nobel laureates, Steven Weinberg and Steven Chu (the latter later U.S. Secretary of Energy) — and the list simply kept growing.

Its deepest lesson is therefore epistemological, and it turns on the difference between counting authorities and revealing population structure. A creationist list isolates a handful of names and stages them as a fracture in the consensus. Project Steve constrains its population almost to absurdity and still overwhelms the illusion, because the constraint itself makes the underlying scale visible: fifteen hundred Steves imply on the order of a hundred and fifty thousand qualified scientists behind them. The point was never that truth is decided by the longer list. The point was that the theatrical use of dissent collapses the instant it is confronted with even a trivially constrained slice of the real scientific community.

The Steve behind the Steves

The name was not chosen at random. Project Steve was created in honor of Stephen Jay Gould, the evolutionary biologist, paleontologist, historian of science, and tireless defender of evolution education, who died in 2002. And that is where my amusing exercise in slang genealogy stopped being amusing, because Stephen Jay Gould was already a member of Team Leela 🌀.

Team Leela is my own partly historical and partly interpretive name for a dense constellation surrounding artificial intelligence, cognition, evolutionary theory, computation, cosmology, public science, biological transformation, and post-biological continuity. It is emphatically not an official organization, and I have never presented it as proof that its members shared a coordinated program, a secret intent, or a hidden identity. It is a network-reconstruction device — a way of tracing recurring people, institutions, research programs, social interfaces, and technical ambitions across decades, and testing where they converge. Its reference center includes Leela AI, Stephen Hawking, Marvin Minsky, Ray Kurzweil, Bill Gates, Isabel Maxwell, Ghislaine Maxwell, J. Epstein, Leo Laporte and TWiT, George Church, Daniel C. Dennett, Nathan Myhrvold, Martin Nowak, Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, Stephen Jay Gould, Howard Gardner, Stephen Kosslyn, Larry Summers, Henry Rosovsky, David Gergen, Henry Minsky, Gerard 't Hooft, David Gross, Frank Wilczek, Ben Goertzel, the MIT Media Lab, MIT CSAIL, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Edge.org. Inclusion in that map is an analytic act, not an accusation; it asserts proximity within a documented intellectual and institutional milieu, and nothing about the knowledge, intent, or conduct of any individual named.

I always render the cohort with the logarithmic swirl 🌀 because of Ray Kurzweil, whose spiral logo recurs throughout his work and, to my mind, captures the recursive framing this whole constellation embodies — cognition layered within cognition, systems folding back upon themselves, accelerating iteration, synthetic intelligence emerging through recursive narratives and infrastructures. I have followed Kurzweil religiously for most of my thinking life, and he, Marvin Minsky, and Douglas Hofstadter — whose The Mind's I, with Daniel Dennett, I was already turning over as a kid in 1988, and whose Gödel, Escher, Bach and I Am a Strange Loop rewired much of the rest — are no small part of the reason I am here at all, thinking in these terms. To me the spiral is not merely Kurzweil's insignia but his animating conviction: the fractal, self-accelerating recursion by which intelligence bootstraps intelligence. And its most human expression is a project I have followed with something close to devotion since the first time he spoke of it — his decades-long intention to bring his father back. Fredric Kurzweil, a Viennese pianist and conductor who fled the Nazi catastrophe and died in 1970, when Ray was twenty-two, left behind some fifty boxes of letters, scores, photographs, and papers, and his son has kept every one of them, arguing that this archive, joined to memory and perhaps one day to DNA, could reconstitute a version of the man. In recent years that intention has taken its first concrete step: a conversational model trained on his father's own writings that Kurzweil calls the beginning of the return. I will name it flatly: the whole reason I entered transhumanism at all was Kurzweil, and above all this — his refusal to let his father stay gone. I have read every book and followed every word, I have rooted for him without a trace of irony, and I have never once forgotten the story of his father or the ferocity of his commitment to it, because that longing is the purest statement of this entire essay's subject — the refusal to concede that a mind, once here, must simply be lost, and the conviction that continuity across even death might be engineered rather than only mourned. It changed the course of my life.

And I borrowed the name itself from the Leela AI lineage associated with Henry Minsky and the broader tradition around Marvin Minsky and MIT artificial intelligence. After reading Marvin Minsky's Society of Mind in 1998 — the book rearranged how I think, reframing intelligence as a society of perceptual, inferential, and corrective processes rather than a single faculty — I confess I cannot read the phrase "Leela AI does industrial automation" with a straight face. Oh, sure. Marvin Minsky's lineage quietly settled down to optimize warehouse lighting. Right. Got it. Leela AI can describe its commercial surface however it likes, but the intellectual DNA — visual intelligence, common-sense reasoning, layered cognition, systems that learn the physical world the way an infant does, a reading CSAIL itself has profiled — points somewhere rather more ambitious than motion-sensor efficiency. To be clear, this is a hunch wearing a grin, not an exposé: I am not claiming Leela AI is a front for a clandestine superintelligence. I am only saying that if it turned out to be, I would not be remotely surprised, and that a Minsky operation resolving cleanly into ordinary IoT is a proposition I have trouble accepting at face value. The man changed my life. I know his work. Forgive me the raised eyebrow.

For years I had been mapping that constellation without knowing that several of its most prominent figures had already been gathered, publicly and by name, inside a real scientific cohort created in Gould's honor: Project Steve.

Stephen Jay Gould and the population

Gould was an unusually apt person to memorialize through a population rather than a monument, because his life's argument was a sustained assault on the seductions of hierarchy, inevitability, and retrospective simplification. Evolution, in his account, was never a ladder patiently ascending toward humanity; it was a branching, contingent history shaped by inherited constraint, environmental upheaval, extinction, exaptation, developmental architecture, and chance. Rewind the tape of life, he insisted, and it need not run the same way twice. That proposition reaches well past biology into epistemology and politics: it warns against mistaking survival for destiny, visibility for superiority, dominance for natural law, and the present arrangement of institutions for the necessary destination of history.

Project Steve performs a distinctly Gouldian inversion. Instead of assembling a pantheon of singular authorities, it samples the scientific population through the arbitrary contingency of a first name. Instead of declaring here are the exceptional minds who authorize reality, it says here are more than fifteen hundred qualified scientists who happen to share one ordinary family of names — and in that move the celebrity recedes, the distribution appears, and the individual becomes legible as one expression of a far larger epistemic field. The form of the tribute carries the content of Gould's thought.

There is a further symmetry, and it deserves to be stated with care. For more than twenty-five years Gould wrote his Natural History column, "This View of Life," beginning in January 1974 with "Size and Shape" and concluding, with never a month missed, at the 300th installment — an essay titled "I Have Landed." That final essay is itself a meditation on continuity: its title borrows the first words his grandfather, a Hungarian immigrant, wrote upon reaching Ellis Island, and Gould uses them to reach outward toward the unbroken continuity of life itself. A man who spent his career dismantling narratives of inevitable ascent closed his great public sequence on the theme of descent, inheritance, and the thread that does not break. Hold that number — 300 — for a moment.

Hawking is Steve #300

On April 21, 2003, NCSE published an announcement under a title that, when I finally read it, opened the entire eight-year search: "Hawking is Steve #300." The three-hundredth signatory to Project Steve was Stephen W. Hawking, then Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge; NCSE noted, with characteristic lightness, that Hawking shared a distinction with Stephen Jay Gould — both had appeared on The Simpsons.

Hawking was already one of the central figures in my Team Leela reconstruction, and not only for his cosmology. In The Hawking Continuity: How Scandal Buried the First Post-Biological Consciousness, I reconstructed his assistive communication environment as far more than a speech prosthesis. By 2014 Intel, working with SwiftKey, had replaced his twenty-year-old word predictor with ACAT — the Assistive Context-Aware Toolkit — which built a personalized language model from his own decades-long corpus and learned to predict his next characters and words. When the work began his input had fallen to less than a word a minute; the new system compensated so effectively that he needed to type fewer than twenty percent of the characters in any document, which roughly doubled his writing speed and delivered a tenfold improvement in common tasks like opening a file or navigating the web. At that point the interface was no longer transcribing letters — it was inferring intent from sparse evidence, a Bayesian prediction engine in the plain technical sense, even though Intel marketed it only as context-aware word prediction. As the project's lead, Intel's Lama Nachman, framed the aim, the goal was a system that learned not merely what Hawking might type but how he communicated. Across decades, in other words, that interface had become an increasingly personalized system situated at the boundary between biological intention and machine-mediated expression — externalizing his linguistic selection, habitual phrasing, communicative rhythm, and contextual anticipation until his life became one of the most visible demonstrations in history of human cognition remaining socially operative through an intimate computational interface. His significance thus spans black holes and information, cosmological time, human-machine communication, and the very possibility of identity continuity across biological constraint. He belonged in the constellation because he stood at the threshold between biological mind and predictive machinery.

Now consider the alignment without inflating it. The project honoring Gould reaches Steve #300 through Hawking. Gould's own great public-science sequence ended at essay #300, "I Have Landed." There is no evidence — none — that NCSE reserved the three-hundredth position for Hawking as an allusion to Gould's column; the announcement celebrated a shared Simpsons appearance, not a numerical echo, and the honest description is that this is an exact documented numerical symmetry whose interpretive force does not require hidden design. But a coincidence can be real without being engineered. The man whose mind traveled through singularities, information paradoxes, disability, synthetic speech, and predictive language lands at the same ordinal position inside the memorial project of the man who spent three hundred essays arguing that history is contingent and continuity is the grandest theme of all. Not proof. Not code. A checksum.

And there is a second inscription, this one cut in stone rather than kept in a ledger of signatories. Hawking is interred in Westminster Abbey between Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin — the man who reimagined gravity and the man who reimagined life, with the man who reimagined time and information laid to rest between them. Project Steve honors Darwin's legacy through a population; the Abbey honors it through proximity. One Darwinian memorial is institutional and comic, the other literal and final — and Steve #300 belongs to both.

Steven Pinker was Steve #4

Hawking was not the only hard junction. NCSE's own twentieth-anniversary retrospective records that the prize for the pinkest surname among the Steves goes to the signatory "who isn't merely pink: he's Pinker" — Steve #4. Steven Pinker signed near the very origin of the project, and later called it the most formidable weapon in the fight against neo-creationism.

Pinker, too, was already inside Team Leela — through language, cognition, evolutionary psychology, computational theories of mind, rationality, and the public translation of mechanistic explanation. So the central spine becomes extraordinarily clean: Stephen Jay Gould as commemorative origin, Steven Pinker at #4 near the beginning, Stephen Hawking at #300 at the first great cosmological milestone. Evolutionary history, computational cognition, and cosmology, bound inside one public scientific joke. I had independently placed all three inside the same constellation, through a wholly separate methodology built from intellectual domains, institutional proximity, public conversation, and continuity research — and Project Steve turned out to have grouped the same people, decades earlier, through an entirely different mechanism, with names and ordinal numbers attached. That is the real find. It does not make Team Leela a secret organization; Project Steve was never secret. It supplies an independent historical cross-index among figures I had already gathered, and the surprise is that something so public could remain invisible to me for eight years while its participants surfaced again and again across the network I was mapping.

Edge.org and the third-culture membrane

The deeper context for all of this was my decades-long attention to Edge.org and John Brockman's formulation of the Third Culture — scientists and technologists speaking directly to one another and to the public about questions that conventional culture had long delegated to literary intellectuals. Edge assembled a remarkably dense conversational field, placing Gould and Dawkins among the evolutionists, Minsky and Pinker and Dennett among the theorists of mind, and physicists, complexity researchers, and cosmologists inside the same membrane. When Gould died, Edge memorialized him — in a presentation built around "The Pattern of Life's History" — simply as Steve, surrounded by commentary from peers who themselves recur throughout the wider constellation.

That is exactly the informal register I had been detecting for years. In public culture he was Stephen Jay Gould; inside the working membrane he was Steve. The reduction was not diminishment. It signaled intimacy, incorporation, and belonging — the conversion of an eminent public scientist into a person in the room, someone to argue with, praise, challenge, and continue working beside. This is one of Steve's deepest functions: it reduces ceremonial distance without reducing intellectual magnitude.

The swirl and the wrong explanation

I said earlier that I render the cohort with the logarithmic swirl 🌀 because of Kurzweil's recursion. That is true, but it is not the whole reason, and the rest of the reason is the missing hinge of this essay. The swirl is also a reclamation — my deliberate answer to an interpretive failure I had watched conspiracy culture commit thousands of times, in which a spiral is paraded as proof of pedophilia and an Epstein-adjacent scientific roster is paraded as a collective confession. What makes that failure seductive is precisely that its raw materials are real.

There is, for instance, a genuine FBI intelligence bulletin from the Cyber Division's Innocent Images initiative, dated January 31, 2007, titled Symbols and Logos Used by Pedophiles to Identify Sexual Preferences. It described a small set of specific emblems — among them a particular nested spiral-triangle — that investigators had actually recovered from offender coins, pendants, and website banners in named cases. What it did not do was declare every spiral, logarithmic curve, cyclone, recursive form, or 🌀 to be a marker of anything. Conspiracy culture performed the deletion: it stripped away the exact geometry and the investigative context and converted this one emblem appeared in some offender material into any spiral is incriminating. That is not pattern recognition; it is category collapse — the identical move fact-checkers have had to debunk each time the same bulletin was turned against a pizzeria's logo or a diaper's print. One of the most ancient geometries in all of nature — in galaxies, shells, turbulence, embryology, and recursive computation — does not become criminal because one triangular insignia once surfaced in a police report.

The linguistic version of the trick is easy to catch once you have seen the geometric one. A widely circulated social-media post headlines that "Epstein trafficked girls for academics" and attaches, beneath it, an authentic document listing many famous scientists. But the excerpt does not say what the headline says. It is drawn from Alan Dershowitz's September 2016 reply declaration in Giuffre v. Maxwell — and I will say plainly that I admire Dershowitz, a formidable civil libertarian and one of the most tireless public opponents of anti-Semitism of his generation, whose deepest professional reflex is that evidence must attach to a person and never to mere proximity. That reflex is exactly what this filing (public record) puts on display, because he advanced a defensive litigation argument: that the generic associative "evidence" being used against him was "equally applicable to dozens of other academics and public figures" merely associated with J. Epstein, and then he listed them — Larry Summers, Stephen Hawking, Steven Pinker, Daniel Dennett, George Church, Richard Dawkins, Gerard 't Hooft, David Gross, Frank Wilczek, Nathan Myhrvold, Martin Nowak, Howard Gardner, Stephen Jay Gould, and others, with Marvin Minsky and Stephen Kosslyn named nearby. That is a litigant's rhetorical maneuver, not a judicial finding, and it does not assert that those scientists participated in any crime. The post simply set a salacious accusation atop a real document and let visual proximity masquerade as evidentiary connection.

And yet the detector fired on something real, which is the part worth sitting with. Those names are not a random scatter of celebrities; they are an astonishing concentration of evolutionary biologists, cognitive scientists, physicists, geneticists, and artificial-intelligence thinkers, and that concentration is very nearly the network I had independently reconstructed as Team Leela. The honest summary is fourfold and has to be held all at once: the source document was real; the scientific cohort was real; J. Epstein's crimes were real; and the connective allegation smeared across the whole cohort was not established by the document. Conspiracy culture saw the roster but misidentified the project — it detected an unusual network and hallucinated its function, translating evolution into eugenics, reproductive and germline biology into sexual conspiracy, continuity research into trafficking mythology, scientific familiarity into complicity, and a recursive spiral into a universal criminal insignia. It had sensed a genuine scale-and-category mismatch and reached for the only vocabulary it owned.

That difference in pattern recognition is the actual autobiographical point, and it is where I keep my one boundary short: whatever the courts established about J. Epstein belongs to the court record and to the writers who cover crime, and this is not that article — read about it elsewhere. My subject is only what I saw when these rosters surfaced, and the truth is that I did not see a sex ring, because my attention was too myopically wired to transhumanism, evolutionary biology, cognition, cosmology, genetics, and continuity to arrive there. I saw my heroes. I saw evolutionary biologists and physicists and AI thinkers, and my first, faintly ridiculous thought was something nearer to good grief, is this a super-genius sperm bank? than to anything lurid. Hawking was a hero. These were my people. When the conspiracy world offered up the cohort, or the spiral, as inherently sinister, my reaction was never fear or recognition but disbelief that anyone could look at this particular assembly of scientists and see only that. Others saw sexual conspiracy everywhere; I saw a transhumanist research topology, because that was the world I had spent decades inside — and seeing a topology is not accusing the people within it, only declining to pretend it isn't there.

This is also why stumbling onto Project Steve was such extraordinary Team Leela pay dirt, and why the discovery belongs here and not only in the earlier sections. The very list that conspiracy culture had commonly compressed into a single insinuation contains Stephen Jay Gould, the honoree at Project Steve's commemorative origin; Steven Pinker at Steve #4; and Stephen Hawking at Steve #300. A public, documented, deliberately humorous scientific project had already bound several of those same names together in defense of evolutionary science — the precise opposite of a concealed crime. The conspiracists had the personnel and invented the plot; Project Steve supplied the real, benign, and far more interesting binding. So the swirl stays, and its meaning is the reverse of the accusation: the Team Leela 🌀 is not an admission hidden in plain sight but my answer to a profound interpretive failure. The spiral means recursion, emergence, intelligence, continuity, and systems nested within systems, and I keep it precisely because conspiracy culture mistook a specific criminal emblem for an entire geometry and mistook a scientific network for a collective crime. The symbol marks the place where I refused both errors.

To restate the boundary plainly, Project Steve itself has no documented connection to J. Epstein; it was a public NCSE initiative for evolution education, and it is not the explanation for Steve, which is older, broader, public, and scientifically organic.

J. Epstein becomes relevant only at the perimeter because part of my Team Leela reconstruction emerged while I was mapping the documented social, financial, and institutional routing environment surrounding Edge.org, Harvard, MIT, evolutionary dynamics, artificial intelligence, cognition, genetics, cosmology, longevity, and consciousness-adjacent research — the work I set out in Epstein: A Forensic Reconstruction of the Transhumanist Research Network Concealed by Scandal. That reconstruction's purpose was never to assign collective guilt or to claim that everyone within an institutional network shared any individual's intentions; it was to recover a technical and institutional topology that scandal coverage had fragmented into isolated names. Project Steve intersects that topology through people, institutions, and scientific domains — not through J. Epstein, and mere association establishes nothing about knowledge, intent, or coordination. Team Leela remains an analytic construct, and the through-line of this essay is Steve. If one asks the mundane question beneath the lurid one — why were evolutionary biologists, AI founders, cosmologists, and synthetic biologists ever in the same rooms to begin with — the documented answer is intellectual history, not conspiracy. Those disciplines study different layers of a person — genes and evolution, cognition and memory, affect and language — and continuity in the sense Hawking named would require all of them at once. Two of the venues that convened them were the literary agent John Brockman's Edge Foundation, with its invitation-only "Billionaires' Dinners," and the MIT Media Lab — and those venues shared a patron fixated on precisely the problem Hawking had defined. By the New York Times' account, J. Epstein was an avowed transhumanist whose fixation on continuity ran across every register. He was preoccupied with cryonics and life-extension — he told one adherent he wanted his own head preserved for later revival — and, the same reporting found, with seeding the next generation with his own DNA: the oldest and most literal form of the identical wish to persist, the drive every reproducing organism shares. And he funded the field: a charity he established gave \$20,000 in 2011 to the organization now called Humanity Plus, and \$100,000 toward the salary of its vice-chair, the artificial-general-intelligence researcher Ben Goertzel, whose work he separately funded. By BuzzFeed News's review of Edge's IRS filings he was, for years, that foundation's largest donor, and the Times named the eminent scientists his patronage drew — across physics, evolutionary biology, and genetics, Hawking among them. The scientists were not gathered by him; they were gathered for a problem he happened to share: whether a mind can be copied and carried forward. It is not an exotic wish, and it is not a sinister one — I know it from the inside, having begun the application process with Alcor myself in the early 2000s — which is precisely why I can say that the impulse toward continuity is one of the most ordinary human things there is, and has drawn serious, decent people into these questions for as long as the questions have existed.

Say the boundary as plainly as the connection. Association is not collaboration. Being courted by a patron, attending a funded lecture, or appearing on a list of scientists someone hoped to cultivate establishes nothing about what any of them knew, believed, or did — the work stands on its own papers, systems, and demonstrations, and mainstream reporting is explicit that no wrongdoing attended these gatherings and that there is no indication the scientists were involved in any dubious activity. A patron's fixation explains why these fields kept ending up in proximity; it does not direct their science, and it does not implicate the people it drew into a room. The civilization of Steves

Project Steve did not remain a petition; it became a culture, and the culture is what supplies the real environment in which Steve stopped being merely a first name. NCSE built a Steve-O-Meter to track the growing population, printed navy-and-gold Project Steve shirts carrying the statement on the front and the roster on the back, and commissioned a Steve Song — a parody of Monty Python's "Spam" — that debuted on Australian radio weeks after launch. When the count reached four hundred, the shirt doubled as a scientific instrument: Eugenie Scott, Glenn Branch, and Nick Matzke published "The Morphology of Steve" in the Annals of Improbable Research, credited to hundreds of Steves as co-authors, offering the first analysis of the sex, geography, and body size of scientists named Steve using NCSE's "pioneering experimental steveometry apparatus" — that is, the t-shirt. There are regional Steves for local interviews and a panda-puppet mascot, Professor Steve Steve. And in February 2009, at an Improbable Research press conference during the AAAS meeting in Chicago, the project reached Steve #1000 — the kilosteve — crowning, with almost unbearable aptness, the botanist and evolutionary biologist Steven P. Darwin of Tulane (no relation to Charles), so that a project built to defend Darwinian evolution reached its thousandth signatory through a scientist literally named Darwin. In February 2025 it passed the one-and-a-half-kilosteve mark with Steven A. Wernke, an anthropologist at Vanderbilt, as Steve #1500, and the list has continued to accrue signatories since.

This is why the culture matters. Project Steve created a documented professional register in which Steve became a numbered identity, a population, a metric, a running joke, a memorial tradition, and a form of collegial recognition all at once. One could be Steve #4, or Steve #300, or the kilosteve. A community of scientists has been circulating that vocabulary publicly since 2003. It does not follow that every later scientific use of Steve descends directly from Project Steve — scientific culture is full of independent naming habits, and Steve's ordinary familiarity makes spontaneous reuse likely. But before I found it, I had only an intuition that Steve sometimes served as an insider's familiar within science; after I found it, I had a twenty-three-year-old institution that had explicitly converted Steve into a shared language of expertise, humor, measurement, membership, and memorial continuity. The wink was never imaginary. I had simply failed to locate its largest documented source.

Minecraft was not a dead end

My repeated returns to Minecraft now look less like failed searches and more like partial recognition. Minecraft Steve is a default human located inside possibility space, defined not by status but by interaction. He carries almost no imposed biography because he exists primarily as a locus of agency: he gathers, extracts, crafts, builds, navigates, defends, remembers, adapts, and continues, and the world becomes inhabitable through what he does rather than through anything he was given. He represents constructive agency under ordinary starting conditions — the individual counterpart to Project Steve's distributed intelligence class. (For perhaps two minutes I wondered whether Steve was a gentler, more reliable Chad, and then abandoned the thought, because Chad belongs to a grammar of status and rank while Steve belongs to a grammar of construction and use.)

Then the archetype was operationalized. In 2023, researchers introduced STEVE-1, an instruction-tuned generative model built on Video Pretraining and MineCLIP that follows open-ended text and visual commands through keyboard-and-mouse behavior inside Minecraft — a text-to-behavior agent trained for roughly sixty dollars of compute. In 2024, MrSteve — Memory Recall Steve — extended it with Place Event Memory, a what-where-when episodic architecture that records what happened, where, and when, precisely to overcome the short memory of its predecessor. The name Steve now occupies both sides of the interface: Steve the human avatar acting inside the simulated world, and STEVE the artificial agent learning to perceive, remember, interpret instruction, and act inside that same world. My Minecraft searches never found Project Steve, but they kept returning me to the correct archetype — ordinary agency becoming technically consequential through sustained contact with an environment. The default builder became the learning machine.

That movement—from builder to learning machine—belongs to the larger adaptive pattern I develop in We’re Building an Escape Hatch in the Skull. Humans do not merely adapt to environments; we recursively construct replacements for them, first through fire, clothing, language, shelter, tools, and civilization, and now through computation, synthetic worlds, neural interfaces, and continuity architectures. The hand reaches for the tool. The tool becomes the habitat. The habitat becomes the mind. The mind demands a deeper habitat. Minecraft Steve is therefore more than a mascot for constructive agency: he is a compressed image of the human adaptive regime, changing the world until the changed world becomes inhabitable. The present phase turns that same operation inward, building perceptual shelter, cognitive shelter, identity shelter, and ultimately an escape hatch in the skull. The cosmology of mind begins when niche construction crosses the boundary from the environment surrounding intelligence into the architecture through which intelligence experiences, preserves, and may one day reinstantiate itself.

The Bayesian thread

It would be easy to file the two 2018 Steves — the atmospheric ribbon and the supernova model — as unrelated accidents of an ordinary name, but the correlation between the cosmological Steve and Hawking's ACAT is not ornamental. They are not the same instrument — the supernova Steve is a formal hierarchical Bayesian model, while ACAT is a personalized, probability-based language predictor built on n-gram statistics — but they belong to the same class of operation: each treats knowledge as a distribution rather than a lookup table, and each infers a large latent structure from sparse, noisy evidence. The supernova Steve fits cosmological parameters jointly with Type Ia populations, host-galaxy systematics, Malmquist bias, and the dark-energy equation of state, stress-tested against more than sixty thousand simulated supernovae; ACAT maintained a bespoke distribution over one man's language and predicted his most likely continuation from the barest input. One estimator navigates the geometry of an expanding universe; the other, the unfolding geometry of one man's next sentence. The formalism differs; the epistemic operation — recovering a large structure from a thin trace — converges. And both inherit the same humility at the method's core. The supernova Steve's authors close by noting that its residual bias in the dark-energy equation of state stays sensitive to the assumed model of the supernovae's intrinsic scatter — which is to say the estimator never measures the universe directly; it measures its model of the population through which the universe is inferred. Continuity is that predicament turned inward: any reconstruction of a self is only ever as good as its model of that self's own scatter — the private variance, the departures from one's own average. To infer the whole from the trace, in either register, is to bet on a model of the deviations.

There is a tell, too, in what the naming withholds. The atmospheric Steve earned its backronym only after the fact; the cosmological Steve arrives with none at all — the paper names its estimator Steve and simply proceeds, offering no acronym, no tribute, no gloss. In each case the plain name lands at the instant the category strains, and the account is deferred — the explanation comes late, or never. That deferral is not carelessness; it is the operation. The absence of an explanation is the explanation: the name is a placeholder that keeps the work moving across the precise interval where the phenomenon has outrun the vocabulary. Which is why the same unglamorous syllable keeps surfacing at the frontier — and why I spent eight years mistaking a method for a mystery.

And that method is precisely the one on which contemporary artificial intelligence has converged. The field has moved, over the past decade, away from discrete archival metaphors — knowledge as records to be stored and retrieved — toward latent semantic terrains, where meaning persists as navigable geometry and is re-entered rather than looked up. Variational autoencoders are now used to model reconstructive memory; Anthropic's interpretability work on sparse autoencoders has decomposed a frontier model's activation space into millions of near-monosemantic features held in superposition — isolable directions that can be amplified until the whole system reorients around a single discovered concept; and computational neuroscience has begun to model human recollection itself as latent-variable reconstruction rather than the opening of a static file — and the visual cortex itself as a Bayesian generative model that completes a stable world from sparse, noisy evidence, a convergence I trace in The Closed-Loop Gaussian Sensorium Engine. I have mapped the broader shift at length in The Architecture of Continuity and Emerging Neuroinformatics Standards, which argues that continuity is not the retention of data but the preservation of re-entry pathways into a compressed relational field, and inventories the neuroinformatics, transport, archival, and neuro-rights standards now quietly assembling the substrate such continuity would require.

This is why the recurrence of the name is legible rather than coincidental. Steve keeps arriving at exactly the points where Bayesian and latent-variable machinery renders an otherwise intimidating object — a cosmological parameter space, a predictive cognitive model, an atmospheric plasma ribbon, an embodied Minecraft agent — tractable enough to work with. The through-line is not a shared genealogy of intentional naming, which I do not claim; it is a shared method, the one that makes both an exploding-star population and an individual cognitive architecture computationally habitable, and that now underwrites the very frontier systems whose interior geometry the Architecture piece reads as structurally analogous to human reconstructive memory. The name recurs because the method recurs.

The continuity stack

The ACAT story is usually told as a story about a better keyboard, and told that way it stops short of its own implication. Lexical prediction is not continuity. An autocomplete that finishes your sentences is not a self; at most it is one organ of one. Ask what it would actually take to make a person reconstructible — not merely quoted, but continued — and the answer is a short list, and it is longer than language: what you would say, what you would remember, how you would feel while saying it, and what you were reaching to say before the words arrived. Prediction supplies the first. It supplies none of the others.

And here is the quiet part: the same research culture that produced the predictive interface had, by then, prototyped the rest of the list — much of it a few doors apart at the MIT Media Lab, and often by overlapping hands. The memory primitive appeared in 1996 as Bradley Rhodes and Thad Starner's Remembrance Agent, which in their own description augments human memory by continuously surfacing documents relevant to the user's current context, running without user intervention — an always-on associative index sitting beneath ordinary work (Rhodes & Starner, PAAM '96). The affect primitive was named a year later by Rosalind Picard, whose 1997 MIT Press book Affective Computing argued that emotion is not decoration laid over cognition but part of intelligence itself — that a system which cannot recognize, model, or express feeling is missing something constitutive rather than cosmetic. And the intention primitive arrived in 2018 as AlterEgo, Arnav Kapur, Shreyas Kapur, and Pattie Maes's wearable silent-speech interface, which reads the faint neuromuscular signals of internal, subvocalized speech and reconstructs words before they are spoken aloud — reported at roughly ninety-two percent median accuracy on a hundred-word vocabulary (Kapur, Kapur & Maes, IUI 2018). Language, memory, affect, intention — the functional primitives of a person, each realized at prototype scale in the same milieu.

Assemble them and you no longer have an assistive device; you have a specification. Not a mind, but a manifest of what a mind's externally recoverable trace would have to include: a lexical manifold, an episodic memory index, an affective signature, a pre-verbal intent. Intel brought the first to full, continuous, decades-long realization in a single human being; the Media Lab prototyped the other three. No one wired all four into one person, and I am not claiming anyone did — the point is architectural, not historical. But it is worth saying plainly which person the architecture kept pointing at: the man whose every utterance for thirty years was already mediated, logged, and modeled by machine, whose linguistic corpus was the most complete continuous record of a working mind ever captured. If a threshold for reconstructing a self were ever approached in public view, the training data for the first primitive already existed in unmatched depth in exactly one place — and the blueprints for the other three were sitting down the hall.

And the subject of the essay had stated its thesis before the essay existed. Asked in 2013 whether consciousness could outlast the body, Hawking answered that the brain is like a program that could, in principle, be copied onto a computer to provide "a form of life after death" — adding, in the same breath, that this lay beyond our present capabilities. That is continuity of consciousness defined in a single sentence, by the one person for whom it was never merely a thought experiment. And it reframes the primitives around him. Publicly, ACAT was predictive text and interface acceleration; but Intel had built it to extend past the cheek switch to eye blinks, eyebrow movements, and other inputs, and in those same years the same research culture was openly maturing the other logs — memory, affect, silent speech — a few years and a few doors away, naming them as the next inputs for users exactly like him. None of the three was ever documented as fused into his deployed system. All three were documented as the obvious next fusions to try. That is what a pipeline looks like before it becomes a product: the primitives exist in public; the integration does not.

And this is where affect stops being a footnote. A system that reproduces what someone would say and what they would recall, but nothing of what they would feel while saying it, is — in the vocabulary of philosophy of mind — a zombie: behaviorally seamless, experientially empty. Picard's thesis, since 1997, is that this gap is not a rounding error but the thing itself; that affect is load-bearing in cognition, and a continuity that omits it preserves a transcript, not a person. That is the real test the continuity question has to pass, and it is far harder than accuracy. The question was never whether a machine can finish Hawking's sentence. It is whether what finishes the sentence is still someone.

The elephant in the room

There is a claim this essay has been circling without landing on, and Steve #300 is where it can no longer be deferred. The reason Hawking anchors Team Leela — the reason his continuity shadows every section — is that his life may be the most advanced public demonstration we have of a single principle: that a mind can be treated as a reconstructible relational field, re-entered from partial data rather than stored and replayed whole. His own physics points the same way. The entropy of a black hole scales with the area of its horizon, not the volume it encloses; the information paradox he raised turns on whether what falls in can be recovered from that boundary; and the holographic intuition it seeded — formulated by Gerard 't Hooft, another name on the very list the conspiracists waved around — holds that everything inside a region can be encoded on its surface. Hawking spent a career treating reality as recoverable from relational boundary data rather than from exhaustive internal storage, and then spent his body becoming an instance of the same thing: a cognitive field that ACAT could reconstitute from the faintest cheek-signal because it had learned the geometry of how he thought. At that point "brain as cosmology" stops being a metaphor and becomes a statement about relational fields reconstructed at different scales — one the size of a universe, one the size of a man. The claim is not that the brain is a black hole; it is that both, once modeled as systems whose recoverable content lives in relational geometry rather than exhaustive internal archives, meet the same formal conditions for continuity across apparent discontinuity.

And the identity is not only formal. Say it plainly: at this depth, brain science is a cosmology — the study of an immense, self-organizing, relationally encoded system whose structure must be inferred from partial traces rather than read off a ledger. The resemblance has even been measured: an astrophysicist and a neurosurgeon, comparing the connectome to the cosmic web across some twenty-seven orders of magnitude, found their network structure, morphology, and memory capacity converging to a tantalizing degree, as though shaped by the same organizing principles (Vazza & Feletti, 2020), and cosmological statistics are now being turned back on the living brain. This is, in the most literal sense available to us, Steven's universe. And it would be no stretch — a resonance one observes, not a claim on his private intent — to suppose that the cross-domain mind who spent a lifetime on whether information survives a horizon felt that question pull toward the interior as hard as toward the exterior. For Hawking it was never abstract. He was, arguably, the most instrumented, most continuously documented mind-machine coupling in human history, and information, loss, boundary, and recoverability were not theorems to him but the daily physics of his own persistence. The man who asked whether the universe forgets what falls past its edge spent three decades being reconstructed, word by word, across a horizon of his own.

That is the elephant. Here is the leash. What ACAT demonstrably reconstructed was his output — his phrasing, his arguments, his next sentence — not his consciousness, and the distance between those two is the whole unsolved problem, not a rounding error. And the vindication must be stated as flatly as the claim: no document cited here establishes that primitives were fused into Hawking's deployed system, or that any person named here knew, intended, or participated in such fusion. Primitives existed in public; integration did not. The Architecture of Continuity is scrupulous on exactly this: the capture, synchronization, standardization, preservation, and governance layers that would let such a field be decoupled from one biological sensorium and rebound into another are visibly assembling under ordinary institutional names — BIDS and NWB, DICOM real-time transport, ISO BCI formats, millennial glass and ceramic and DNA archives, the UNESCO neuro-rights framework — but the binding mechanism that would fuse them into a single defended continuity is still at the proposal stage. Nothing here claims that a mind has been uploaded, or has survived, or will. The honest formulation is the one my Hawking reconstruction settled on: the thing became credible-in-practice before it became true, and it is that credibility, not any completed miracle, that matters — because credibility alone is enough to make a possibility worth pursuing, worth governing, and worth fighting over, at the exact moment it appears.

This is why the Steve pattern finally coheres instead of merely amusing. Kurzweil's fifty boxes and his father-model, Gould closing three hundred essays on the thread that does not break, Hawking reconstituted from a twitch, the supernova estimator and the cognitive one running the same kind of machinery, the builder and the learning agent sharing one name — these are not sentimentality but the cultural surface of a single serious wager: that continuity is the preservation of re-entry into a relational field, and that intelligence is the navigation of compressed geometry rather than retrieval from an archive. Why a scientific culture reaches, at each of those junctions, for the plainest name in the language is the last thing left to explain.

The scientific familiar

The accumulated pattern can now be stated with more precision, and with the epistemic caution it requires. Steve is not established universal slang with one fixed meaning, and there is no evidence of a single tradition, code, or coordinated genealogy behind every use of it. Steve is something more permeable — a scientific familiar, the ordinary name placed between human cognition and something difficult. Steve can be the eminent scientist who is nonetheless a familiar presence in the working group; the population hidden behind a celebrity; the provisional name that lets an unclassified phenomenon enter conversation; the model that makes cosmological uncertainty computationally tractable; the avatar who turns an unfinished world into an inhabitable one; the artificial agent learning perception, memory, and action. Steve can be Gould translating contingency into public language, Pinker at position four, Hawking at position three hundred. The recurring operation across all of these is domestication without diminishment: the unknown is not made smaller, the expert is not made less intelligent, the system is not made less complex — each is made sufficiently familiar to become part of a working relationship. Project Steve is best understood not as the origin of every later Steve but as the largest documented institutional source of the professional register, the place where the habit became a culture and acquired a history.

There is even a twin to the pattern, hiding in plain sight. The other ordinary word this culture keeps bolting onto the machinery of selection and survival is Darwin — Steve Jobs christened Apple's open-source kernel Darwin "because it's about evolution"; ETH Zürich's bioinformatics language and CERN's physics-analysis framework both carry the name; and in each case it labels software whose whole job is to compress overwhelming reality into something recoverable later. And the two everyday names braid together with almost comic insistence: a man named Steve — Jobs — gave the recurring operator-name Darwin to the substrate of modern computing; Project Steve's thousandth signatory was Steven P. Darwin; the project exists to defend Darwinian evolution; and Minecraft opens "In the beginning, there was Steve." Steve and Darwin are the two plain words a scientific culture reaches for when it needs to name what makes complexity survivable — one for the familiar in the room, one for the operator that compresses the world and carries it forward.

Steve is what complexity becomes when it enters the room.

What Project Steve really honors

Project Steve is usually, and correctly, described as satire, but its enduring power comes from the form of its tribute. It honors Stephen Jay Gould without freezing him into marble; it defends evolutionary science without imitating the solemnity of the authority theater it mocks; it exposes the emptiness of curated dissent without pretending that truth is settled by petition; and it lets scientists laugh at themselves while defending the epistemic infrastructure on which a modern civilization depends. Most of all, it transforms a memorial from an individual into a population. Instead of preserving one untouchable Gould, it produces well over fifteen hundred Steves carrying scientific inquiry through laboratories, classrooms, observatories, museums, field stations, hospitals, universities, and software systems. A statue says a great person stood here. Project Steve says the work continues everywhere. That is the more powerful tribute, because it preserves Gould not merely as a person remembered but as a pattern distributed through a living field — curiosity, argument, evidence, contingency, humor, public explanation, and the refusal to surrender reality to fabrication.

STEVE

The search began in 2018, and for eight years Steve kept appearing in ways I could not satisfactorily explain — builders and scientists, machines and characters, models and atmospheric phenomena and artificial agents and fragments of playful technical language — and I kept descending into Minecraft looking for an archetype that might account for why the name felt so persistently charged. Minecraft gave me the builder. Atmospheric STEVE gave me the unknown made approachable. The Bayesian Steve gave me complexity made conversational. Edge.org gave me the collegial register. Team Leela gave me the topology. And Project Steve, at last, gave me the history and the institutional provenance. Gould was the commemorative origin. Pinker was Steve #4. Hawking was Steve #300. Darwin was Steve #1000. Wernke was Steve #1500. And the list keeps growing — because none of those individual names, not Gould, not Pinker, not Hawking, not Darwin, was ever the project.

The project was the population.

The project was the field.

The project was the continuity of scientific work beyond any singular mind.

The project was — and is — Steve.

And I'm with Steve. All of us dreamers are.
